Chapter Twelve

“I don’t do boats,” Georgia said. They stood in the ferry boat passenger line waiting to get across the bay and to Victoria.

“It’s not a boat. It’s a ferry. And they are incredibly safe,” Eliza said.

“I’ve heard of ferries sinking. There was one in India, I think,” Georgia said. She looked out over the water. It was a lot of water and she wasn’t a good swimmer.

“Phish, this is British Columbia. They’re pros at ferries.”

“Have you ever ridden one?” Georgia asked, hoping Eliza was as well-versed at ferries as she’d been about Amsterdam. Georgia had a startling epiphany. She had survived going to a foreign country, hadn’t she? After that, what was a boat? A very large boat, Georgia noticed as it pulled into the docking area. It looked like a baby cruise ship with a gaping hole where the cars drove on.

“See?” Eliza said. “It’s as safe as your mother’s womb.”

Georgia pointed at the life rafts hanging from both sides of the ferry. “Then why do they have those?” she asked. She pointed at the life rafts which were covered tightly with bright yellow tarps.

“I think they have to have life boats,” Eliza said. “Rules and regs and all that.”

Georgia’s courage was flagging fast. Thoughts of the movie Titanic swam around in her head. They hadn’t had enough life boats. Did the ferry? “Are there enough life boats? How do they know how many people will be on the ferry? I’m not a good swimmer. Are there sharks in the water?”

“Will you relax? I’m a good swimmer. I won a medal when I took swimming lessons when I was twelve.”

“That makes me feel so much better,” Georgia said sarcastically.

“I’m gathering you suffer from Thalassophobia? That means a fear of the sea. Or it could be Naviphobia, which is a fear of boats, but that usually means just cruise ships. I don’t know if they have a word for fear of ferries.”

“How do you know all that?” Georgia asked.

“I’m a life coach. We deal in phobias,” Eliza said. “We could coin our own word. Call it Ferryphobia. Maybe you invented your own phobia. How awesome is that?”

Eliza’s brightness was contagious. It was hard to be depressed around her. It seemed like whenever Georgia was around Eliza the sun shone brighter. Today was no different. The sky was a deep blue and a gentle breeze kept the growing heat of the day from being too unbearable. She had to admit, a person would be hard put to find a more gorgeous day to be on the water.

The line began to inch forward toward the ticket booth and the entrance to the ferry. Its gaping maw began filling with cars. Georgia was stuck. She was left with no choice but to overcome her fear of ferries. She paid the man sixteen dollars and twenty-five cents and received her ticket. Georgia could only imagine what driving a car onto the ferry cost. Then she remembered that she had money and supporting beautiful British Columbia seemed like a good way to spend it.
